The archival material presented in this page is drawn from the physical and digital materials available at the offices of GATWU/Munnade. This material reflects the work undertaken by individuals who are currently part of the organisation but also of many who have come and left over the years. It also contains materials that were created when Munnade and its office-bearers were associated with a Bengaluru-based NGO CIVIDEP. Care has been taken to ensure that this is material that has been produced under the name of GATWU/Munnade.
Much of the material available is also born-digital material, in that it was created first on a computer in the offices of GATWU before it acquired life—only sometimes—as printed material such as memorandums, letters to officials, factory managements, newsletters circulated physically. In that sense, there is a certain incompleteness to the documents, in that they are not signed, mastheads are sometimes absent, dates and signatories are not often clear.
All of this material is open access because we believe that anyone who has an interest in knowing more about garment women workers in Bengaluru and surrounding areas should be able to stitch their own stories about what has happened and what still needs to happen. The archival material is organised as follows:
The Garment Workers Archive Project is a foundation Project implemented by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) under the Project 560 programme, made possible with support from BNP Paribas India.
